etisalat to charge calls by the second

Abu Dhabi: etisalat will start charging its customers by the second as soon as the new system is introduced, the company announced on Thursday.

“The cost of mobile phone calls will be charged by seconds once the new system is implemented in the country,” said Mohammad Khalfan Al Qemzi, etisalat’s chief executive officer.

Under etisalat’s current billing system, the first 60 seconds are charged 30 fils for local calls, followed by 15 fils for each subsequent 30 seconds. The off peak rates are 12 fils.

Last week, Osman Sultan, du’s CEO, said his company will target etisalat’s clients to achieve its target of a 30 per cent market share, and even beyond.

“It is understandable to see etisalat pursuing an aggressive promotional campaign at this stage, and it’s their right, because we are here to compete,” he told reporters in Abu Dhabi.

Charging calls by the second has been announced by du earlier, with Sultan assuring that this comes as a better offer than etisalat .

The picture can only be clear when du announces its tariffs, which should be cheaper when calculated per second.
