Batelco claims cut-price internet service success

According to Batelco, its previously controversial 256k BD10 ‘inet’ cut-price internet package has generated an “overwhelming response” from the residents of Bahrain.

“We are delighted with the response to our BD10 inet Broadband package,” said Ahmed Al Janahi, Batelco’s general manager of corporate affairs, today. “There are already more than 16,000 customers enjoying this service now while a number of new orders pour in daily.”

The value-aimed BD10 package is, Batelco claims, the most affordable broadband internet access plan available in the market today. It offers an ‘always on’ connection with download speed of 256k (more than four times faster than dial-up internet), and unlimited usage for the first 2Gbytes of data.

The new BD10 offer has not only benefited customers but also stimulated sales of related products, according to Batelco. “We are not only offering the best value to our customers, but also stimulating the sales growth of PCs, laptops and related equipment in the local market,” added Al Janahi.

The launch in S of Batelco’s cut-price BD10 package only took place after months of struggle between Batelco and Bahrain’s regulator, the TRA. Batelco made its first application to the Kingdom’s TRA for the BD10 package in January 2006, but after five months of further submissions to the authority, pre-registration and any further marketing of the product was blocked by a June TRA Emergency Order (see here).

However, following Batelco’s court win at the beginning of August - in which Bahrain’s Senior Civil Court suspended the TRA’s Emergency Order - this new internet service finally gained fully approval, which allowed Batelco to prepare for its October launch.
